La carabine semi-automatique Kalashnikov SR1 chambrée pour le 223 Remington est à ce jour l’unique carabine développée spécifiquement pour les compétitions de tir pratiques IPSC
Dotée d’un système de recul équilibré, le fusil comprend deux pistons à gaz, pénétrant dans un bloc de gaz unique au-dessus du canon depuis des directions opposées
Le piston de gaz arrière est fixé à l’arrière de la carcasse. Le piston de gaz avant se déplace à l'opposé de celui arrière, et il est fixé à un contrepoids coulissant situé au-dessus de l’ensemble culasse.
Les deux contre poids sont synchronisés par une paire d'engrenages rotatifs, de sorte que chaque mouvement de décharge vers l'arrière et vers l'avant du groupe est équilibré par une masse à contre-mouvement attachée au piston de gaz avant, annulant efficacement les impulsions générées par les pièces en mouvement.
En conséquence, le fusil génère moins de recul et est beaucoup plus facile à tenir sur la cible en cas de tir rapide. Le concept a été développé dans les carabines expérimentales produites par AL-7 et AKB-1 Izhevsk, puis lancé en série en tant que carabine de sport SR-1
